Every morning your ring gives you a single HRV number, and it is tempting to read it like a verdict: good night, bad night, something is wrong. Before you do, it is worth knowing what that number really is, how it is measured, and how much of the night-to-night wobble is your body versus the sensor.
What your ring actually measures
Your ring does not use electrodes the way a medical ECG does. It shines light into the skin and reads the pulse of blood passing through your finger, a technique called photoplethysmography, or PPG. From the tiny timing differences between beats it works out your HRV, almost always overnight while you are still, and reports it in milliseconds (usually as rMSSD).
Measuring at night is deliberate. You are not moving, not drinking coffee, not stressed by a meeting, so the signal is cleaner and far more comparable from one night to the next. So the number is a nocturnal, resting HRV from an optical sensor. That is genuinely useful, and it is also a specific thing, not the same as a lab HRV test taken in the middle of the day.
How accurate it really is
The honest answer has two halves. For tracking your own trend and comparing one night to the next, validation studies of ring PPG against medical-grade ECG have found strong agreement. That is the job most people actually want it for, and it does that job well.
The weaker half is absolute accuracy. The exact millisecond value can drift from what an ECG would read, and it shifts with fit, skin, temperature and movement. That is why comparing your absolute HRV to a friend's is close to meaningless: different device, different body, different baseline. Your number is for comparing you to you.
What moves the number, signal and noise
When your HRV drops, part of it is real and part of it is measurement noise, and it helps to tell them apart. Real physiology that lowers overnight HRV: alcohol (one of the biggest and most reliable), a late or heavy meal, a hard training session that day, an illness brewing, short or broken sleep, high stress, even a warm room. Those are your body spending recovery, and the ring is right to flag them.
Then there is the noise: a loose or too-tight fit, cold hands, a night of tossing and turning, or the sensor simply reading poorly. This is exactly why one strange number on its own is not worth much.
Read the trend, not tonight's number
One night's HRV is a data point. Your trend is the signal.
The mistake almost everyone makes is reacting to today's number. HRV is naturally variable night to night, even in a healthy, well-rested person, so a single low reading tells you very little. What is informative is the direction over a week or two against your own baseline: a steady decline usually means accumulated load, stress or illness, and a steady climb usually means you are adapting well.

How to actually use it
Treat the ring as a trend tracker, not an oracle. Give it a few weeks to establish your baseline, then watch the direction rather than the daily wobble. Do not compare your absolute number to anyone else, and do not panic over one bad night.
